Hey Lutes! The Washington State Fair in Puyallup is one of the biggest fairs in the U.S., and it offers a fantastic opportunity for international students at PLU to experience local culture, enjoy thrilling rides, and discover new events. Whether new to the area or looking for a fun fall activity, this guide will help you make the most of your visit.
Fair Schedule
Mark your calendars for the Spring Fair in 2024, which will take place over two weekends: April 11–14 and April 18–21. This is a fantastic event to enjoy all your favorite fair activities like thrilling rides, adorable farm animals, and, of course, the signature fair food. It’s open most days, but hours may vary, so check the schedule on the fair’s website for specific opening and closing times. Be sure to plan your trip in advance, so you don’t miss any of the exciting events!
Thrilling Rides You Must Try
- Classic Coaster
Wooden roller coaster has been a mainstay at the fair since 1935 and has been renovated to last the next 100 years. This ride has the longest line so I recommend trying it first! - Revolution 360
I love this ride! I think it's the scariest ride in this fair, and this ride seemed to be the latest to be made. - Vertigo
For something more relaxing but still exciting, take a ride on the Vertigo. It’s one of the best ways to see the entire fairgrounds and take in the stunning view of Mount Rainier and the surrounding area. - The Zipper
For a wild ride, hop on The Zipper, which spins you around in all directions. This is a fun one for anyone who loves the feeling of tumbling through the air! - Family-Friendly Rides
There’s also a range of rides perfect for students who prefer a more relaxed experience. The Carousel and Kiddie Coaster offer a gentler but still enjoyable ride. The Kiddie Coaster is also a great option if you’re attending the fair with younger family members.
Unmissable Events at the Fair
- Concerts and Live Performances
The fair has a fantastic lineup of live music featuring local and international artists. You can enjoy concerts that cover a wide range of genres—from rock to pop to country. Be sure to check out the concert schedule to catch your favorite performances! - The Rodeo
If you’ve never seen a rodeo before, this is your chance! Watch as skilled cowboys and cowgirls compete in events like bull riding and barrel racing. It’s a thrilling glimpse into American Western culture. - Cultural Exhibits
Learn more about the diverse cultures in Washington through art, food, and craft displays. These exhibits are a great way to see and celebrate local and international traditions. - Carnival Games
Test your skills at the carnival games scattered throughout the fairgrounds. Whether it's tossing rings or popping balloons, the fair offers a variety of games that could win you some fun prizes. - Agricultural Exhibits and Animal Shows
The fair’s agricultural exhibits showcase local farming and livestock. You can walk through barns filled with award-winning cows, sheep, and even chickens, and experience the hands-on petting zoo. It’s a unique chance to learn about Washington’s farming culture.
Best Food to Try
The Washington State Fair is also known for its incredible food! Here are some must-try dishes:
- Fisher Scones: These iconic treats are a staple of the fair and should be at the top of your list
- Turkey Legs: For a true American fair food experience, grab a giant turkey leg and enjoy!
- Deep-Fried Everything: From deep-fried Oreos to deep-fried pickles, there’s a fun and unusual selection of fried goodies to try.
Tips for PLU International Students
- Getting There
The fairgrounds are located in Puyallup, just about a 20-minute drive from PLU. If you don’t have a car, check with the International Student Center or student groups to find out if there are carpools or group outings to the fair. - Discount Days
Look out for discount days or student tickets to save money on admission. The fair often runs promotions where you can get cheaper tickets during certain weekdays. - Cash or Card
While most vendors accept credit and debit cards, it’s always a good idea to carry some cash for small purchases or in case a vendor is cash-only.
Why You Should Go
The Washington State Fair is one of the highlights of the fall season in Washington State, and it’s an experience you don’t want to miss as an international student at PLU.
